In this Q&A with Maya Peters, director of VAEFF 2023 selection “Camp Isaboko”, Peters reflects on why she wanted to “voyeuristically transform the fuzzy idea of childhood ‘Americana'” in her film, and how her experience at VAEFF “served as a poignant reminder that we are all part of one large and interconnected creative community.”

SHOWstudio: Maya Peters’ fashion film ‘Camp Isaboko’ featured at the New York Video Art and Experimental Film Festival last month. We caught up with the filmmaker to talk about fashion in film and her dedication to turning fantasy into reality.

Below is a chosen quote from Maya Peters’ interview with SHOWstudio about her experience at VAEFF:

Q: What is it about VAEFF that’s different from other fashion film festivals?

A: “It all comes down to the festival’s remarkable commitment to artist engagement. This is a crucial aspect that I feel often gets overlooked, making VAEFF stand out by offering artists a genuine platform to articulate their creative processes and unique approaches. It’s a festival that recognises the individuals behind the films, making sure that we aren’t mere faceless contributors hiding behind art. VAEFF’s genuine empathy and keen interest in its creators make the film festival a standout experience, where the spotlight was not only on the work itself but also on the passionate individuals who brought it to life, their journey and their minds.” – SHOWstudio
